SCIENTIFIC PURPOSE
Bioinformatics and genomics are two of the most rapidly
growing interdisciplinary fields of science, and expected to
make a huge contribution not only to the advancement of
basic biological science but also to biotechnology and
medicine in the future. However, because of its speed of
growth, the developments of research infrastructure and
international collaborations fell behind. These are the
fields that need exchange of researchers with different
academic backgrounds and cooperation among them. Both France
and Taiwan are two of the most rapidly growing regions in
the world. Biotechnology and IT are among the most promising
areas contributing to the future economy in these two
countries. Thus, Bioinformatics and genomics are good
targets of cross-country collaborations, and time is ripe to
create a new system for cooperation among these two
countries.
The Institute of Bioinformatics at National Yang Ming
University to celebrate the opening of the new building
place for biomedical informatics research, we are organizing
the first Taiwan-France Joint Symposium on Bioinformatics
and Genomics in Taiwan this year. With the interactions we
had before with French scientists, we really enjoyed the
scientific discussion and have found the opportunities for
collaboration. Therefore, we would like to organize the
first Taiwan-France Joint Symposium on Bioinformatics and
Genomics together. This event will take place in Taipei on
Monday, September 11 this year. The seminar speakers will
include scientists from both countries for close interest matching. We may not only continue our discussion before, but
also discover more new common interests. We plan to
consolidate our discussion and come up with solid proposals
this time.

The
2006 Taiwan-France Joint Symposium on Bioinformatics and
Genomics is aimed at forming Taiwan-France Bioinformatics &
Genomics Network as both a strong close connection and a
forum between two countries to facilitate collaborative
research and infrastructure development in bioinformatics
and genomics. Such collaborative projects will promote new
directions of research and more comprehensive field
development, which are difficult to establish in individual
country.
