This course focuses on using computers to do biology.
Goals for the course: The course will familiarize students with the principles and tools of contemporary computer applications in biology. The goal is to learn about computers, and at the same time either learn biological content, learn to use computers to extend your understanding or to assist you in analyzing, presenting, or learning a biological topic.
Course Requirements:
Prerequisites: A familiarity
with the concepts of biology, basic chemistry, and
comfort using computers and the internet
Although there are no
formal course prerequisites, you should have at least one prior
high school course (or better) in each of biology,
chemistry and computer skills.
Reference books:
(1) Programming
Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0, by Francesco Balena (1999).
(2) Chemical Kinetics & Reaction Dynamics, by Paul Houston (2001).
(3) Developing Bioinformatics Computer Skills, by Cynthia Gibas & Per
Jambeck (2001).
(4)
Bioinformatics Computing,
by Bryan P. Bergeron (2002).
These are available from the
Yi-Hsient Bookstore.
Access to a computer with an internet connection
The lecture notes will be available in Acrobat (pdf) format.

Problem sets: There will be two problem sets, each of which is expected to take you several hours of work. These problem sets are intended to give you hands on experience with the work of computational biology, and should be learning experiences as well as evaluation tools. The bulk of these problem sets will involve going to various web sites and doing things.
Problem sets and solutions will be posted here.
You should create your own CAB student's web site to submit your solutions for these problem sets.
Midterm: There will be an in-class Midterm exam on May 1, and it will be worth four problem sets.
Final: There will be an in-class final exam on June 26, and it will be worth four problem sets.
