An introduction to the theory and practice of Molecular and Cell Biology.
Goals for the course: The course will familiarize students with the principles and tools of contemporary molecular & cell biology. By the end of the course, students will have a working knowledge of a variety of topics important in molecular & cell biology, and a grasp of the underlying principles that is adequate for them to evaluate and use new tools as they arise in the future.
Course Requirements:
Prerequisites: A familiarity
with the concepts of biology, basic chemistry, and
comfort using computers and the internet
Although there are no
formal course prerequisites, you should have at least one prior
upper division undergraduate course (or better) in each of biology,
chemistry and computer skills.
For this course, students will be required to read in advance a (or several) particular chapter(s) of the textbook. Additional reading material may also be assigned by each instructor.
Textbook: The Cell: A Molecular Approach, by Geoffrey M. Cooper. (2000). The book is available in the Yi-Hsient Bookstore.
Supplementary text:
(1)
Molecular Biology of The Cell,
by Bruce Alberts et. al. (2002).
(2) Cell and Molecular
Biology: concepts and experiments, by Gerald Karp (2002).
(3) Molecular
Cell Biology, by Harvey
Lodish et. al. (1999).
(4) Genes VII, by
Benjamin Lewin
(1999).
These are also available from the
Yi-Hsient Bookstore.
Access to a computer with an internet connection
The lecture notes will be available in Acrobat (pdf) format.

Problem sets: There will be two take home problem sets, each of which is expected to take you several hours of work. These problem sets are intended to give you hands on experience with the work of molecular & cell biology, and should be learning experiences as well as evaluation tools. Problem sets aim at solidifying the concepts acquired in the lectures.
Problem sets and solutions will be posted here.
Midterm: There will be an in-class Midterm exam on April 19, and it will be worth four problem sets.
Final: There will be an in-class final exam on June 28, and it will be worth four problem sets.
