Bioinformatics project :
Cross-genome
Comparison of E. coli Bacteriophages
Bacteriophages belong to viruses that only infect specific bacteria host.
Phage is probably the most widely distributed biological entity in the
biosphere, with an estimated population of > 1030 of any
environmental niche where bacteria or archaea reside. They play important
roles in bacterial ecology, evolution, and pathogenesis of human
bacterial infections. In our study, we use 40 different bacteriophages of
the Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli as a model to find
the rules behind bacteriophage genome organization and their general
properties through comparative genomics analysis.
1. The phage genome
offer an exciting opportunity to understand molecular mechanisms of phage
diversity and evolution. On the other hand, the phage serve as potential
therapeutic agents for antibiotic-resistant or no-antibiotic bacterial
infection diseases, we hope that they can provide a new manner to improve
clinical therapy and applications.
2.
Besides, current
inefficient gene delivery represents a major obstacle for widespread use
of promising approaches in molecular medicine, including human gene
therapy. We will try to redesign competent phage vectors to increase the
efficiency of gene delivery or gene therapy system with the obtained from
the current study.
